About
Yoon Hee Kim is a Korean American ceramic artist and educator based in New York. She is the founder of Yoon Lab Ceramics, a studio specializing in handcrafted contemporary Moon Jars rooted in Korean ceramic tradition.
Born in Seoul and raised in New York, Yoon studied visual design at the School of Visual Arts in New York before dedicating herself fully to ceramics.
She returned to South Korea to study traditional pottery techniques under multiple Korean masters, spending years learning the wheel throwing methods practiced during the Joseon dynasty, the tradition that gave rise to the Moon Jar, or 달항아리.
Her Black Moon Jar series is the result of over two years of clay body research sourced from Korea, the United States, and Europe. The matte black surface draws on the volcanic basalt landscapes of Jeju Island, where her mother is from. Each jar is wheel-thrown following the traditional method that makes every Moon Jar an imperfect sphere.
Yoon teaches Korean traditional wheel throwing in English through in-person workshops in Korea and US, and through Yoon Lab School, an online ceramics education platform featuring masterclasses with expert Korean ceramicists.
Her workshops include techniques such as Moon Jar wheel throwing master class and throwing off the hump, a traditional Korean production method.
