Yoon Hee Kim Profile

About

Yoon Hee Kim is a Korean ceramic artist and educator based between New York and Hawaii. She is the founder of Yoon Lab Ceramics, a studio specializing in handcrafted contemporary Moon Jars rooted in Korean ceramic tradition.

Born in Seoul and raised in New York, Yoon studied visual design at the School of Visual Arts before dedicating herself fully to ceramics. After more than a decade of pottery practice, including three years of intensive training under Korean master potters, she developed a practice rooted in traditional Korean wheel throwing techniques and the quiet beauty of the Moon Jar.

Her Black Moon Jar series is the result of more than two years of clay body research using materials sourced from Asia, the United States, and Europe. Inspired by the volcanic basalt landscapes of Jeju Island, where her mother is from, each jar is wheel thrown using traditional Korean methods, allowing every form to become its own imperfect sphere.

Through in person workshops around the world and online education, Yoon teaches traditional Korean wheel throwing techniques including Moon Jar making and Throwing Off the Hump.

Through both her ceramics and teaching, Yoon hopes to preserve and share the traditions and philosophy of Korean ceramics while inspiring others to experience the mindfulness found through making.
