Rooted in the white porcelain tradition of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, the Moon Jar has endured for over four centuries as an object of quiet contemplation. First made by Korean potters in the 1600s, each vessel is traditionally thrown in two halves and joined by hand, creating a subtle asymmetry that gives every Moon Jar its singular presence.

This contemporary interpretation is handcrafted by Yoon Hee Kim, a Korean ceramic artist trained in traditional Korean wheel throwing techniques in South Korea. Honoring the spirit of the historic form while reimagining its material language, her work explores the relationship between heritage, nature, and stillness.

Developed through more than two years of clay body research using materials sourced from Asia, the United States, and Europe, the matte black porcelain draws inspiration from the volcanic basalt landscapes of Korea’s Jeju Island, where Yoon’s mother is from. Its surface carries a quiet depth, absorbing light rather than reflecting it, revealing texture and movement over time.

Each Black Moon Jar is individually wheel thrown and high fired to achieve its volcanic matte finish. No two are identical. Variations in form are not imperfections, but traces of the hand and an essential part of the Moon Jar tradition, where beauty emerges through balance, restraint, and individuality.

A meaningful gift for weddings, housewarmings, birthdays, and collectors of contemporary Korean art. Each jar ships with a certificate of authenticity and a note on the origin of the piece.
